The Amazons of Dahomey were really important in the Kingdom. Symbol of protection, courage but also for the respect they instaured.
Today, Benin does not have Amazons anymore but they are not forgotten. They are still considered as part of the most feared women in history. They were a living legend not afraid to die to protect the people under their protection.
Nowadays, the Amazons are not known by everyone and, most of the time when we talk about “amazons”, we think of the ones of the Greek Mythology. They were considered as brave and fearless which explains why the French soldiers were amazed when seeing them as they reminded them of the Greek mythology.
However, one of the biggest inspirations they left, if not the biggest, is the one from Black Panther by Marvel Studio. They were a great inspiration when making the characters in charge of the protection of the Kingdom and of King T’ Challa.
In Benin, some cults are still made to honor their fight for the freedom of the country.
